Every year around this time McDonald’s puts out their famous Shamrock Shake. It’s pretty glorious to look at and even more glorious when that sweet minty flavor touches your lips. Top that with some whipped cream and it’s a match made in St. Patty’s Day heaven. I love milkshakes but sometimes I opt for other options because they’re so high in calories. I can usually make a healthier version of milkshakes with protein or a low calorie ice cream. This Protein Shamrock Shake comes in at under 200 calories which is less than 1/4th the calories of a large McDonald’s version. It’s just as tasty and to make it even better, it’s packed full of protein.
McDonald’s Shamrock Shake Nutrition
Let’s take a look at the McDonald’s version as far as the nutrition goes. A large Shamrock Shake has 800 calories, 22 grams of fat, 131 grams of carbs, and 19 grams of protein. A medium contains 560 calories, 16 grams of fat, 91 grams of carbs, and 12 grams of protein. A small contains 460 calories, 13 grams of fat, 74 grams of carbs, and 10 grams of protein.
I’ve been making these for the kids too and they have no idea that the beautiful green color is actually coming from spinach. I have them drinking protein shakes with hidden health all rolled into one. Spinach gives it that touch of green and you can’t even taste it.
Add a little whipped cream and some green sprinkles and you’ve got yourself a festive and nutritious Shamrock Shake without breaking the calorie bank. Did I mention that this Shamrock Shake also packs 7 grams of fiber per serving? Yup, add that into all the benefits this shake has.
I purchased a couple tubs of the seasonal PEScience White Chocolate Mint protein powder and I wish I would have purchased the larger size. The mint isn’t overwhelming and I noticed the texture is so rich and creamy when I blend it. I usually bounce back and forth between Dymatize and PEScience when I make protein shakes or protein smoothies because the consistency is better than other protein powders I’ve tried. 1 scoop PEScience White Chocolate Mint
1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1 cup packed raw spinach (approximately 50 grams)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4th cup Maple Grove Sugar Free Maple Syrup
1–1 1/2 cup ice
whipped cream (optional)
1/4th tsp xanthum gum (optional)
